“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: Courage to continue, that counts.”
— Winston S. Churchill
Senior year English
One of my favorite lessons we learned was medieval romance and knight’s virtues. My favorite assignment was watching the Lion King (even though I hate that movie) and comparing the movie to the story of Hamlet. One of the things that will help me in the future while at college is the knowledge in writing an APA paper and decluttering. It should be very useful in my college courses.
My least favorite parts of the class were reading the original hamlet, the comic was way better, and working in groups where no one did anything and you were left to do the work yourself, like peer reviewing. However some groups I was in actually did what they were supposed to do so it wasn’t all that bad. Advice I have for the incoming seniors is to relax cause it’s your last year of high school and senior English is easy. As long as you draw pictures on your vocab cards, get your work done and in on time you’ll keep your grade up.
Satire
During this satire project I learned various types of satire. Some of the different types of satire include: parody, Juvenalian, incongruity, Horatian, reversal, and exaggeration satire. My group did exaggeration satire. Exaggeration satire is to enlarge, increase, or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen.
I’m always scared to work in groups because I like to be in charge and I get worried other members won’t do their fair share. For the most part everyone did do their own part of the project. We had exaggeration satire and we chose an Office episode when Michael, Andy, and Dwight are doing parkour around the building. Parkour is literally an exaggerated way of getting from point A to point B. For our activity we were going to do a giant yard game but we didn’t get to because of the coronavirus and switching yo online schooling.
Hamlet vs The Lion King
There were many similarities between Hamlet and The Lion King. The main characters are princes with evil uncles wanting to rule the kingdom, their fathers were murdered, there’s a love interest and many more. Some differences between Hamlet and The Lion King are that Simba’s mother never remarries like Gertrude does, Simba believes he is responsible for his father’s death, and the uncle is not killed by the rightful king in The Lion King.
One thing that surprised me is that The Lion King is based off of Hamlet. After reading Hamlet and then watching The Lion King you see the similarities between the two. Although Hamlet is dark and depressing as in The Lion King is a better version made for kid viewers. I never realized the plot of The Lion King was based on a Shakespeare story.
Hamlet Reflection
Hamlet is a tale of murder and madness. It tells of Hamlet losing his father and mother to his evil, cruel uncle. The story is filled with death, lies, love, and deception. All the main characters in the story die because of their ambition or loyalty to one side. I did not like that ending.
What I have learned in this unit was the very odd world Shakespeare lived in. The women are not treated fairly and the men think they are very powerful, when in all reality we know women are stronger. In Middle English no woman was allowed on stage to perform in a play. Everything was under the control of men. I think the play Hamlet offends many of the women.
A quote from the play I liked and think relates to today’s society is “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” -Hamlet. I believe it means that nothing is really good or bad in itself, it’s all about what a person takes from a situation. Love the way you lie by Eminem and Rihanna related to Hamlet very well. Ophelia is telling her father about what Hamlet did to her and in this song the man is telling a story about what he did to a woman. In both they are going man from love. It makes them go crazy but even though they do the men know the woman loves them back and still will after they hurt them.
APA
What I learned from the APA and writing in this unit is the correct and formal way to write an APA paper. By starting with an annotated bibliography, you find your most reliable cites that inform you about the subject of your paper. What was frustrating about making an APA paper was deciding on what to write about and how to summarize your topic on paper.
What was new was the annotated bibliography. I haven’t done annotated bibs before this year and it really helped me on coming up with what to write on my paper. Learning how to write an APA paper will really help me in the future because many classes in college will ask us for APA papers; learning about it takes the stress out of writing it. APA is a good tool for college.
APA Career Research Paper
New things that I learned from the APA research paper was mainly the schooling that was required for all of my topics. I am excited to learn more about the day-to-day schedules. Also about the accomplishments and promotions that you can earn. I want to see people in the job. Possibly go out and talk to people that have chosen The carriers that I’m interested in.
For the job shadowing I’m excited to learn about the process going into the careers. I want to see them in action. I’m also excited about meeting new people and just talking to them. It was very fun researching all of the careers that I’m interested in. Also learning about who you get to work with.
Personality Quiz
Mediator personalities are true idealists, always looking for the hint of good in even the worst of people and events, searching for ways to make things better. I’m constantly the one person that is saying “well what about this that was nice” or something like that. I always think people that do me wrong can change and I give people 100 chances. I think this quiz helped me a lot in not doubting myself on why I do what I do.
Left unchecked, Mediators may start to lose touch, withdrawing into “hermit mode”, and it can take a great deal of energy from their friends or partner to bring them back to the real world. I definitely agreed with almost everything I read about my results. It was very interesting on how accurate it was since I don’t believe in online quizzes. The only part I disagreed with was the ability to learn multiple languages. I can not do that and it never came easy to me as the quiz said it would.
Canterbury Tales
In the Canterbury tales we see examples of greed is the root of all evil and self-same sovereignty. Greed is the root of all evil is shown in two stories. In the Prologue the people of the church abuse their powers and don’t follow the rules of the church. For example the Nun takes extra food and takes it home to feed her dogs. Also the Squire is selfish and not committed to being a knight.
In the Pardoner’s tale there were three brothers that would die for each other and trusted each other. They went looking for death to kill him. On the journey they came across an old man that pointed them towards death but instead the brothers found money. They ended up killing each other for the money. Due to them being greedy once they had money.
In the Wife of Bath we learn about a guy that takes advantage of women. He is sent out to learn about what women really want. He learns that women want self-same sovereignty. In this time period I don’t think we see self-same sovereignty. I do think women fight for it a lot more and try to make their marriage equal but not everyone is like that. I do think there is a lot of greed is the root of all evil in this time period. People take advantage of having money and would rather have money than friends.
Field of Dreams
Field of dreams is similar to Beowulf because it follows the qualities of an epic. John in Field of Dreams, has a big hubris like Beowulf. John cuts ties with his father because of this. Beowulf’s hubris is that he believes that he can take on anything by himself. They both soon find out that their hubris is their hamartia. Beowulf goes to kill the dragon on his own and dies after the fight. John regrets the day he left his father.
John’s quest helps him make amends with his father. Beowulf has no quest for him, his quest is just to prove his power and strength. Although they have the same hamartia their endings are completely different. Their magical weapon is also different with John having his faith and Beowulf having his giant made sword. These are some of the differences between the two characters.
Social Commentary
Social commentary is anything that offers insight into society, values, and customs. Today our society is corrupted by technology. Technology is an addiction in society. Most people wake up and look at their phones first thing in the morning. People addicted to there phones miss what’s happening in the real world and just read about it on line. I believe that this addiction sets us up for failure. Technology is the easy way out of doing something in life. People will prograsinate more now on their phones. Technology is a blessing and a curse.
I am part of this addiction. When I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is look at my phone but it also helps me wake up faster. I believe that back before technology life was happier. I also believe we wouldn’t be where we are now without technology but people are weak because of it. You see something you don’t want to see on social media and it makes you doubt yourself. When seeing a picture of someone you think is better than you, you wish you were them. I wish I could give up my technology and social media like many people have but I rely don’t let anything affect me. I believe technology is a blessing for improvement and research purposes but forms of social media have made many problems.
